It’s interesting to know that while most of the ant species bite, the primary reactions on us are caused not by bites, but by their stings, as a result of a portion of venom being injected inside the skin. Stings of such aggressive ants like fire ants and harvester ants can indeed be the cause of painful and itchy feelings. So, yes, it is really not a very good idea to step in a fire ant mound. Statistically, the legs or feet are the most exposed areas for ants bites.

Symptoms of fire ant bites include:

  • burning sensation in a matter of seconds after the bite
  • the feeling of extreme itching on the skin and such symptoms may last up to 7 days
  • small blisters filled with fluid after about a day of the incident
